Book-Go-Round

The Book-Go-Round, the Friends' used bookstore in downtown Saratoga, first opened 32 years ago on March 17th 1983 in the original Saratoga Library building on Oak Street. Initially it shared the space with the Valley Institute of Theatre Arts who had a business office and a ticket booth on the left side of the building. The Book-Go-Round began with 36 volunteers and was open only a few days a week, for a few hours each day. There was no storage, so donations were shelved soon after they came in. That first year the bookstore had total sales of $11,300. Fast forward to 2014. We now have 155 volunteers, are open 7 days a week and at the Saratoga Library have a sorting room, storage sheds and the Cafe Bookstore, our value priced retail area in the library. This past 12 months we had total sales of over $144,000, including Auctions and Paperback sales. We have come a long way.

The BGR has 55 category sections ranging from Americana to Writing. We have a large assortment of "current to collectible" books as well as CD's, DVD's, VHS, Audio books, sheet music and records - all at a price that really can't be beat. New books are shelved regularly with children's books added almost daily. We also have a "New Arrivals" area, which showcases books of current interest, titles that are new to the store, and other specially chosen books. Up on top of the bookcases, we have Encyclopedia sets, special literature collections and various other sets of interest to collectors.

If you haven't been to the Book-Go-Round recently or have yet to cross the threshold - please stop by, say hello to the Friends volunteers and take a look at what we have to offer. There are many treasures, not-so hidden on the shelves and display areas. You can take a seat, enjoy the classical music and read a book if you wish. You could even volunteer if you love books and find yourself looking for something rewarding to do. The Book-Go-Round welcomes you!

Volunteer Opportunities

The Book-Go-Round has volunteer openings, especially on Saturday and Sunday. If you have 2 to 3 hours a month and love books and meeting interesting people, the BGR may be the place for you. For more information call Jan Barisich at 408-379-7970, and pick up a volunteer application at the store or download via the BGR website. It’s a great way to “give back” to our community.
