Friends Gives $149,000 Grant to Saratoga Library
Gayathri Kanth, Community Librarian, accepts a check for $149,000 from Terrie Creamer, President, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries. Funds from the annual grant to the library are used to supplement and enrich materials, programs, services and resources for library patrons.
“The staff greatly appreciates the time and effort the Friends expend on behalf of the Saratoga Community and the Saratoga Library,” said Gayathri as she accepted the check.

Funds from the 2010 Grant will be used to enrich the library experience for patrons of all ages:
The Early Literacy Station is a computer system for preschoolers who love the colorful keyboard, mini-mouse and headphones while using the educational tool designed for children 2 through 10. Software programs, highly rated by Children’s Technology Review, expand across seven curricular areas. To launch a program, such as Mill’s Math House, Krazy Art Room, JumpStart Phonics, Dora’s Magic Show, Sammy’s Science House, or Reader Rabbit, the child clicks on the picture of the program.
The Adult Best Seller Area is one of the most used sections in the library. Several literary sources, literary reviews, and patron requests provide sources for the books selected. Books are checked out for one week; allowing a rapid turnover so that more people can enjoy the popular books.
The grant funds the library’s book clubs for children throughout the year and Adult Book clubs. This Fall, the children’s book clubs will read Going for Ghosts, Ghost Town at Sundown, and The Mayflower Treasurer.
In December, two special performances come to the library through the use of the grant: The Night Before Chris Mouse performed by P&T Puppets, December 7, 7:30 pm, and Opera San Jose presents excerpts from Hansel and Gretel, December 16, 3:45. The programs are always fun and dramatically stimulating.
Grant monies support several teen programs: the poetry contest, the essay contest, summer reading program prizes, and craft programs.
